John Hagen, a distinguished professor from the University of Toronto, recently embarked on an immersive visit to Changzhou Traditional Chinese Medical Hospital. His visit was part of the World Menghe Medical School Development Alliance and Changzhou Traditional Chinese Medical Hospital’s overseas cooperation and exchange conference.

Exploring the Richness of Traditional Chinese Medicine

During his visit, Professor Hagen had the opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). He visited the Menghe Medical School Museum, the Health and Health Preservation Pavilion, and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Exhibition Hall. The profound atmosphere and exceptional service philosophy of the hospital left a lasting impression on him. “It was my first time to gain such an in-depth understanding of Chinese medicine culture,” he said.

Hands-On Surgical Guidance and Academic Exchange

On October 22, Professor Hagen conducted an impressive laparoscopic surgery demonstration at the integrated operating room of Changzhou Traditional Chinese Medical Hospital. He guided the team of the Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Digestive Disease Treatment Center and shared his extensive surgical experience and unique insights. The session not only deepened the team’s understanding of laparoscopic surgery but also fostered academic exchange between surgeons from different countries.

Introducing Cutting-Edge Techniques in Colorectal Cancer Surgery

Professor Hagen shared his expertise in the application of modern surgical techniques, such as the use of indocyanine green (ICG) in general surgery and laparoscopic T4 colon cancer resection surgery. Colorectal cancer, as the third most common malignant tumor worldwide, has always been a hot topic in the medical field. He detailed his clinical experience in performing colon cancer resection surgery at the Humber River Hospital in Toronto, discussing the clinical characteristics, diagnostic methods, and surgical treatment options for T4 colon cancer, with a focus on the role and limitations of laparoscopic surgery.
